In the plot of ' The Disobediant Son', family was very important to the Mayans. Not many cultural aspects were present in the folktale. The main focus of the folktale was what steps the godson took to make the story turn from bad to worse. The godson's grandfather was a priest and it tells the readers how religion was important to the Mayans as well. The guardians of the grandson cared about him and wanted him to be taught to be kind and respect people, especially the ones who are closest to him.
